Busy Girl
Lucy is turning into quite the adventurous little lady. She loves to be outside and explore. She gets upset when I won't let her out in the front yard when the boys are playing with friends across the street. She loves to climb. She laughs a lot and makes us laugh too. She is as much a sweetheart as ever.

A Birthday Girl
This doesn't seem like it was that long ago.
But it was! Look at her now!
We had a small celebration.
Rhett was eager to help Lucy open her presents.
Chocolate cream pie stood in for the birthday cake.
We didn't even make it through "Happy Birthday" before Lucy was sneaking a taste.
I think she liked it.
Happy birthday to Lucy! This has been the quickest year of our lives, and one full of more joy and love than we could have ever imagined. We love this girl so much.

Christmas Art (to brighten the blog)
Our house is a whirlwind of Christmas preparations these days. So much to do, and not enough time. I'm trying to focus on what really counts and not do too much stuff. This year is fun because Benjamin is more into Santa than before. Last night after our ward Christmas party, he confidently affirmed that the real Santa had been there. Rhett is getting into it, too, but not as much. Benjamin keeps reminding Rhett that "Santa can hear you."
Something really fun (to me) about Benjamin recently is his artwork. Up until now, he would never draw pictures, or even color in a coloring book much. This past summer for Grandpa Duersch's birthday, Benjamin drew him a picture of some balloons and it was the first picture of his that was really recognizable as what he said it was. Now he seems to be coloring up a storm. It's so fun to see the things in his brain going onto paper.
For the ward Christmas party the primary kids were asked to color these ornament outlines which were then hung as decorations on the walls. Maybe at some point I'll post pictures of our family at the party (we took pictures!) but with my track record this year I wouldn't count on it. For now (or forever) this will have to do.
Rhett is really into yellow lately. Really. He loves anything yellow. He cried at Thanksgiving when he learned that I had not, despite his request, made a lemon pie. (I had in fact told him I would not be making a lemon pie, but his little 3-year-old heart was still counting on it.) It really is so funny, his yellow obsession, until we can't find his yellow spoon/plate/cup at dinner and a tantrum ensues. Rhett has been alternating between very sweet and very sassy. Sometimes he'll respond to one of my instructions with a cheerful "Um, sure!" and others he responds with a surly "No, mommy-poopy!" (The latter "endearment" has been going on for months in different variations. He hasn't tired of it, but I have.) I am amazed every day at how much he is growing up. Sunbeams in 3 weeks!
Since this "short" post has now turned into an update post, I guess I have to mention Lucy. She's pretty much the same as last time, though. A third tooth has come through. She's delightful as ever. She'll be nine months old at the end of this week. This has been the fastest (and most blurry) nine months of my life.
Back to the purpose of this post, I'll finish off with another piece from Benjamin. He drew this in his primary class today. This may be the last post we get till next year, so maybe I should have titled it "Merry Christmas!" The subject of this picture is what it's all about, after all.
(If you can't tell, it's Baby Jesus in the manger. And maybe that's a star up above?)

Lucy
Thank you for all of the kinds comments about my blogging hiatus. It's nice to be reminded that I'm doing a more important thing by mothering instead of blogging. (Not that I'd make a career out of blogging.) Still, I know I'll regret it in the future when I look back to find no record of my children's growing years and those little things that get forgotten if not written down. So here I go with a renewed effort to record what I want to remember.
I want to start with Lucy because this sweet little girl, who will be 8 months old this week, has done so much growing since last time I wrote about her! I want to say babies change so fast, but really Lucy has stayed very much them same in so many (wonderful) ways!
In short, she is a delight.
She started sleeping through the night at 2 months old. (Don't be jealous.) With few exceptions, she has slept all night ever since. It is awesome. I can't say how it happened other than that I implemented an eat, play, sleep routine with her pretty much from day 1 and I think it totally made a difference compared to how things went with the boys, who both didn't sleep through the night till they were over a year old. I also got over my anxiety about letting a baby cry a bit in the crib, but she didn't do that much since I relied on the routine to know when to put her down. After she's been up for an hour or two, if she exhibits any signs of sleepiness, I put her in bed, usually with a pacifier* unless one can't be found in which case she uses her thumb. And she almost never gets nursed to sleep. (I think that's one reason the boys--and I-- had such a hard time before.)
*(Speaking of pacifiers, I don't want to forget this: When she was first born Rhett called her pacifier a "fireplace," as in, "I found Woocy's fireplace!" Or, "Woocy needs her fireplace." But is sounded like "pirepwace." I think he was just swapping syllables and "fireplace" was the closest match he could think of. I wish he hadn't figured out the right word because it was so cute.)
Although I prefer to put her in bed when she's sleepy, Paul likes to snuggle her to sleep sometimes. How can I say no to that?
Lucy is so happy. Always. I generally avoid superlatives, but this one applies. It is so easy to get a smile out of Lucy. She makes you feel like a million bucks when you see her. Your spirits can't help but be lifted.
She's a great traveler. She only recently started hating her car seat, but even then she's very forgiving and will smile once the final buckle is snapped. She's easy to nurse while out and about (something I almost never did with the boys), so I feel a lot of freedom to go places when I need to go.
Her brothers adore her. They have been surprisingly sweet with her, despite the times when she ruins a train track or something like it. They usually want her near them and will often (much to my disapproval) carry her around to different parts of the house. They have never expressed any dislike for her, and have never appeared upset about the attention she requires as a baby. Sometimes (or several times a day) Rhett will roar at her like a monster and she will cry. But that's about the worst of it.
Lucy has funny hair. She was born with a good head of it, but then she rubbed a pretty good bald spot into the back. It's finally filled in again, but the really funny thing is the two long strands of hair behind each ear. They're almost down to her shoulders, while the rest or her sweet, soft baby hair is still close cropped to her head.
A couple of months ago Rhett told me that Lucy has "blueberry eyes." And she does! We've called them that ever since. There's no telling whether they'll stay blue, but they sure are beautiful, and we get comments about her blue eyes from strangers all the time.
Lucy is on the move! She started moving herself around the house pretty efficiently when she was only 5 months old, scooting in a way the boys didn't learn till they were about 7 1/2 months old.
Her first tooth popped through in mid-October. Actually, I noticed it was already there when I was checking her mouth after a little bonk that made her gum bleed. It had probably broken through a couple of days before and we didn't notice. She, like the boys, is not a fussy teether. Her second tooth came out a little while later.
Lucy's name inspired our kids' Peanuts-themed Halloween costumes for this year. Although I didn't manage to get a great picture, you can sort of see the little puffed sleeves and scalloped collar in the "Lucy" dress I made for her out of a thrifted men's blue corduroy shirt. It was a project that I probably put too much time into for so little return, but I don't really mind.
Recently Lucy started saying "ba ba" a lot. It's fun to hear the beginnings of words from her. Paul and I are each trying to get her to say "Dada" and "Mama" respectively. I think I'm winning. While she was in bed with us this morning before church she said "ma ma" a few times, but I will admit that I don't think she's making the sounds in association with me yet. I can't wait until she does.
I cannot describe enough just how much we all love our little girl! She brings so much light to my days and joy to our home.

Lucy's Blessing, May 8, 2011
We were grateful to have Grandma and Grandpa Duersch and the Sego family come to visit for Lucy's blessing day. It was a cold spring day, but we loved having the company.
I made Lucy's blessing outfit the day before (note to self: quit procrastinating), using the basic idea behind this dress, and the pattern for these bloomers. (Love the bloomers. Need to figure out making them in bigger sizes.)
A little about why we named her Lucy...
I was seriously worried that she would be born and not be named for weeks. I could not think of a name that felt right to me, let alone one that felt right to both of us, that we both liked. But a month before she as born we started talking about Lucy, a name that I'm sure crossed my mind previously, but for some reason was dismissed.
Paul may have his own take on this, but in my mind there were several reasons for choosing Lucy for our daughter's name, none of which was more weighty than the others. For starters, we wanted a family name, either for her first or middle name (or both). That's just something we like to do. Lucy is a family name, although not one that is very meaningful to us since we don't know much, if anything, about the Lucys in our ancestry. Paul's great-great grandmother (on his mother's side) was Lucy Grover, born in Farmington, UT, 7 January 1849. Her father was Thomas Grover, born 22 July 1807, in Whitehall, NY. Thomas Grover operated a freight boat and was working on Lake Eerie when he met Joseph Smith, Jr., and Sidney Rigdon and was taught the gospel and converted to the Church. On my side of the family, Lucy is the English name that was given to my great-great-great grandmother, who was a member of the Seminole tribe in Oklahoma, born sometime around 1823. I don't think much is known about her (more is known about her children), but I've always thought it pretty cool to be 1/32 Seminole.
Besides being a name found on the family tree, we just plain liked it. Lucy is simple and sweet. Sure, it comes with endless rhyming nicknames, some of which we have already put to use, but we have never met (or heard of) of Lucy we didn't like. Also, it is a name that everyone has heard of, but that isn't over-used. And it's not weird. We don't do weird names.
Finally, a little story. When I visited Honduras when I was 18, there was a little girl in the community I stayed in named Luz, which is Spanish for light. I loved that. I wished that I could name one of my kids Luz but knew I never would because, to English speakers, that would be weird. And no one would pronounce it right. The Spanish phrase for "to give birth" is "dar a luz," which, when I learned it years ago, also struck me as very beautiful. What could be more true about bringing a baby into the world than giving light? (My more fluent friends must forgive me if I'm botching translations, but I don't think I am.) So Lucy was a fitting substitute for Luz.
Lucy certainly has been a light to our family. Her brothers adore her, as do Paul and I. She is happy nearly all the time. Our easiest baby by far. (Can we get a round of applause for sleeping through the night at two months??) She fills our hearts with joy and love daily. More current information about Lucy to come. (Blog catch-up is such a pain!)
